I Took A Stroll Down the Old Long Walk...

I've seen "Music Monday" posts done on many blogs, usually introducing a new band, artist, song, or album that the blogger is really feeling that week. I haven't really taken interest in doing any such post because frankly, I haven't really heard any music worth posting. I think I may have fallen behind in keeping up with current hits because what I thought was musically hip back in the United States around December, is currently hip in Ireland. I guess I'll have a lot of catching up to do with iTunes when I get home! But anyway, there is one song that I know will forever remind me of my experiences in Ireland - "The Galway Girl" from Steve Earle's 2000 album Transcendental Blues. Most people who have seen the movie P.S I Love You starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler are probably familiar with the tune, it is the song sang by the hunky Irishman in the scene where Swank and her girls in a traditional pub for a night out in Ireland. I had heard the song in that movie, liked it, and downloaded it onto my iPod well before I ever knew I'd be studying in Galway. Upon my decision to go abroad, I would play that song over and over, excited about being a real "Galway Girl" in just a few months. (I'm cheesy, sorry.) Once actually arriving in Galway, I heard the song performed by a local band while I was out one night, and I felt like I may have been in P.S I Love You - Gerard, where were you?! Since that night, I have heard the song many times, whether it is by request of my friends and I or on the band's own accord. The song is definitely a crowd pleaser, with its catchy sounds and "aye-eye-aye-eye-aye" repetitions. The lyrics even describe meeting a Galway girl and taking a stroll with her "down the old long walk...on the Salthill prom..." which is a promenade by Galway Bay that I often find myself on. While I know that I won't be in Ireland forever, I also know that anytime I hear that song, wherever I may be, it's certain to take me back to all those nights spent pubbing with good beer and great friends, and I think that merits a "Music Monday" post. If you want to feel like a Galway Girl, click on the icon below and hear it for yourself.

Love and songs that bring you back,
Haley
